Philadelphia-based group Hop Along spent the third show of their current tour in Boston last Thursday night. The five piece debuted tracks from their third studio album, Bark Your Head Off, Dog, before closing out the night with Get Disowned fan favorite “Tibetan Pop Stars.”
The presentation on Thursday was simple. A handful of Edison bulbs strung from the ceiling while the five band members stood semi-circle across the stage, which enabled vocalist Frances Quinlan to deliver her storied lyrics without distraction. This also allowed the band to pause for frequent quips amongst each other as well, sharing quick conversations that made you feel like you’d been there watching them practice from the couch all along. Just before recounting the band’s old days playing shows at now-defunct warehouse spaces in Allston, Quinlan furthered this notion by telling the crowd, “now you’re just at every one of our rehearsals.”
Also notable were Columbus, Ohio-based Saintsenca, who are joining Hop Along for the summer tour. It’s been three years since the indie-folk outfit put out a full-length record, but on Thursday they previewed two new tracks from a forthcoming album.
You can catch both both bands as they continue along their summer tour this May, heading southwest toward Nashville before heading back northeast to Brooklyn to end the month.
