INTERVIEW WIT’ SKATERS

554990_596403473704407_1931199134_nBrooklyn trio Skaters may have captured the essence of the quintessential New York band, health but all have roots elsewhere. Former Bostonians Michael Ian Cummings and Noah Rubin were previously in Dead Trees, drug while UK native Joshua Hubbard played in the Paddingtons and Dirty Pretty Things. The three friends came together to create a blend of up-tempo garage punk and groovy melodies that makes their music fun rather than uninviting. Their 7” featuring the single “I Wanna Dance (But I Don’t Know How)” was just released today and their self-titled LP will be out later this year. Be sure to pick up a copy and catch their show at Brighton Music Hall this Friday before they continue their tour across the pond in May.

I got a chance to ask lead singer Michael a few questions and here’s what happened:

Christa Metropolis: Whenever I hear about Skaters, find I always picture a bunch of sk8ter bois. Recently I found out that none of you guys skate. So what’s the story with the name?

Michael: Well, we wouldn’t have too much time to skate anyway. We’re musicians first and we don’t to break our wrists. We chose the name because it reminded us of our youth.

New York City is very imperative to your sound but you and Noah are originally from the Boston area. What do you miss about Boston and what’s your opinion of the music scene over here?

M: I miss the camaraderie in Boston. While I was just getting into the scene in 2006 and bands would look out for each other there. They do in New York too but it’s just different in Boston. I was the youngest one hanging out back then and I knew they always had my back.

According to your song, you wanna dance (but you don’t know how). If you could learn any style dance what would it be?

M: Oh, so you took that title literally. I want to learn how to Sissy Bounce.

How has the tour been thus far and where are you most excited to play?

M: Our tour was cut short so we’re just doing our own thing right now. I’m excited for Boston because I’ll get to see old friends. I’m excited for New York too because it’s like our homecoming.

*Bonus*

Would you rather be permanently attached to a skateboard or wear a figure skating costume for the rest of your life?

M: Permanently attached to a skateboard…while wearing a figure skating costume for the rest of my life.
