On October 13th, Big Thief and Palehound played to a sold out crowd at The Wilbur. The show was one of the first of their month long tour together, so the mix of people packed into the room’s seats and floor were all excited to hear what each act had in store–––and they didn’t leave disappointed.
Palehound started the night off strong. Their set included songs from their 2019 album, Black Friday, such as singles “Aaron” and “Killer,” as well as tracks from older records like Dry Food and A Place I’ll Always Go. During the show’s more upbeat moments, like the song “Cinnamon,” the band had the theater’s crowd really moving, while more intimate songs like the recently released “Your Boyfriend’s Gun” brought the venue to a silent and attentive reflection. Throughout the set, the energy from front person Ellen Kempner’s vocal delivery and guitar playing left the crowd both moved and impressed.
2019 has been a great year for fans of Big Thief, with the release of U.F.O.F. in May, and their latest album, Two Hands, in October. Songs from both of these records made it into the night’s performance, as well as tracks from some of their past releases, all of which resonated with the Boston audience. Apart from the four piece’s highly moving setlist, front person Adrianne Lenker’s guitar solos at the end of “Not” and “Real Love” were some of the crowd’s favorite and most memorable moments, as was their encore performance of a new yet to be released song.
