The Weather Station – Loyalty
by Cara E. McCarthy
Due out May 12th, thumb Loyalty, discount will be the third release from singer-songwriter, pilule Tamara Lindeman’s project, The Weather Station. The opening track, “Way It Is, Way It Could Be” sets the tone for what we can expect from the rest of the record- intimate lyrical confessionals painted with beautiful imagery and colored by a sonically stunning landscape.
Lindeman’s lyrics are both poetic and narrative. In the song, “Shy Woman” she writes, “Seemed to me that luxury would be to be not so ashamed. Not to look away- even this, heaviness, deserved no less than to always confess every false smile.” Her guitar performance is exceptional as it captures the equivalent emotion the vocals convey. Each musical note on this album is so precise and deliberate, and creates a blanket of sound for her most private of feelings to be sung over.
Lindeman worked on this album in the winter of 2014 in collaboration with Afie Jurvanen (Bahamas) and Robbie Lackritz (Feist), just outside of Paris. Listening through the album, you can feel the inspiration and energy the city had on the recording process- everything is transparent and almost vulnerable. Lindeman is known as “a songwriter’s songwriter” in addition to the list of instruments she proficiently plays on her album- guitar, banjo, keys, and vibes.
Shortly before jumping into the studio, Lindeman stopped by The BIRN in the fall of 2014 to perform on BIRN Alive. She gave a powerful, soulful, yet delicate performance of a few of the new songs from her new release. The simplicity of her acoustic renditions of her songs made for a stunning performance.
You can watch The Weather Station perform “Flood Plain” and “Way It Is, Way It Could Be” here. Loyalty has just been placed into rotation at the BIRN (www.thebirn.com).
