While we were all sleeping off our Thursdays, The Social Experiment dropped a whole new album,  entitled Surf, for free (for free!) on iTunes. If you haven’t heard of The Social Experiment, that’s okay– there’s a good chance you’ve heard of one of its members, the inimitable Chance the Rapper.

Chance is adamant about his role as a member of The Social Experiment rather than its frontman, though the band first cane together as a backing band for the MC on his post-Acid Rap tour and subsequent rise to fame. And upon giving it a listen, its apparent that Surf is a fully immersive and collaborative effort, masterminded by Donnie Trumpet, who (you guessed it) plays the trumpet. Through the album’s 16 tracks and some 50 minutes, Surf flows freely from free jazz to old-school backing beats to verses from the likes of Busta Rhymes and Janelle Monáe, among others.
