Girlpool recently made their way through Europe on tour, stopping in London to record a session for NME, where they played a cover of Radiator Hospital’s infectious “Cut Your Bangs,” a shining track from the band’s 2014 Torch Song. If you happen to follow Sam Cook-Parrott’s charismatic’s internet presence, you’d know the Radiator Hospital frontman is:
1) A huge fan of Girlpool
2) Really excited
The original may sound lighthearted enough, but a closer look at the lyrics make Girlpool’s take on “Cut Your Bangs” slightly more appropriate, and especially somber. No, you say you’ll cut your bangs, I’m calling your bluff/When you lie to me it’s in the small stuff the duo sings with a grimace to counter the near impeccable mix of Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad’s vocals. Despite any sort of melancholy felt from either tune, it’s certainly heartwarming to see bands celebrating the work of their favorite artists, and in this case, their friends. For that alone we applaud Radiator Hospital and Girlpool, while happily noting the latter’s charming fringe.
Watch Girlpool’s cover of “Cut Your Bangs,” before taking a listen to the toe-tapping original.
