Next Thursday, sale Brighton Music Hall will get a jolt of future electronica in the form of Icelandic act Kiasmos. An unlikely collaboration between BAFTA-winning composer Ólafur Arnalds and synthpop producer Janus Rasmussen, the duo’s intriguing mix of neo-classical arrangements and minimal, experimental techno makes for a moody, atmospheric experience that takes you off guard without overwhelming you. While it’s hard to really describe the group’s unique sound, there is an element of the thematic grandeur of Sigur Ros on display here, but tempered with a restraint and focus on rhythm that we’ve learned to expect from Four Tet.
Kiasmos’ live set is a subtle spectacle in itself. Arnals and Rasmussen have assembled a host of tools, all routed through Ableton, to bring their lush compositions to life. The duo remain hunched over laptops, mixers, keyboards and drum pads for the the set, but, unlike some of their contemporaries, exhibit a focused, captivating intensity, exploding into a affable head-nods as the songs swell. It’s a quiet dynamism that brings you closer into the vibrant soundscapes they explore, and is best represented in their excellent KEXP performance, which you can check out below.
Allston Pudding is teaming up with our Community Partner, The Brain Trust to give away a pair of tickets to see Kiasmos. If you want to see this intriguing act for the low, low price of free, enter below!
