Kicking off the first weekend of November, IAN SWEET played to a familiar Boston crowd at Great Scott in celebration of their new record, Crush Crusher. Joining them for the night were openers Sean Henry and Young Jesus.
The Saturday show drew a small crowd at first with its 6:30 start time, but as the night went on, the venue continued to fill up more and more. Sean Henry’s opening performance showed off a handful of grungy indie rock songs, ultimately closing out with “The Ants.” Likewise, Young Jesus followed up with a captivating set. Somewhat early in their performance, the band surprised the crowd by saying they only had one song left, but confusion and disappointment quickly turned to glee as Young Jesus launched into the epic 20 minute long track, “Gulf.”
When headlining act IAN SWEET finally began their performance, they immediately brought Crush Crusher to life, playing song such as “Holographic Jesus,” “Spit,” and more from the new album. Fans of 2016’s Shapeshifter were also pleased to hear a few older hits, like “#23” and “Slime Time Live.” Other highlights from the show included a solo performance of Crush Crusher’s catchy title track from front-person and guitarist Jilian Medford, and the show’s final song of the night, “Hiding.”
