Little Death Records is a new name to the Boston music community, but the talented guys behind the new label are not. Tim Oxton and Travis Hagen have put in some time in some well loved local bands and are now using their expertise to put out music that they love. Tim and Travis took some time out of their snowy weekend to answer a few questions for us about what we can look forward to seeing from Little Death Records.
AP: What exactly is Little Death Records, and how did it get started? How do your experiences as musicians affect the way you want to develop Little Death Records?
LDR: Little Death Records is a limited edition music label. We silkscreen all of the labels by hand and number each tape. Ideally, it allows for the tape to be an art medium as well as a listening medium. We’re trying to emphasize community by involving local artists to make the art that we silkscreen. We’re also trying to stay consistent with our central aesthetic; the music and main artwork will change from tape to tape but the general look will stay the same, creating a central theme throughout our releases. So someone could see one of our tapes from a distance and immediately be like, oh hey, thats a little death release.
We’ve both been involved boston music scene for awhile now and really wanted to experience and be involved in the other end of releasing music. Plus, we wanted to help bands that we really like get their music heard.
AP: What artists are you guys working with right now?
LDR: Right now were working with Mini Dresses from Boston on their March 10th release and Surf Curse from Reno, NV.
AP: What kind of relationships do you aim to form with artists you work with?
LDR: We’re hoping to have a family-like vibe with our roster – really give our artists a face, not just a band; we’ll help people make friends with bands they wouldn’t have otherwise crossed paths with. We also plan on putting together shows that can facilitate the family deal.
AP: Do you guys have any long-term or short-term goals for the label?
LDR: Long term, we really want to be part of the effort to bring together the art and music communities because they’re both really awesome but at this point, they can be kind of separate
Treat yoself night by Eye Design and the Hassle are both doing great things in this regard and we’re hoping to contribute to that.
AP: Can you guys give us any hints as to releases that you guys might work on in the future?
LDR:Surf Curse is a our next immediate plan but we got some other pretty rad/super secret things down the pipeline.
AP:What Boston bands are you guys really into right now?
Tim: lately Ive been really into fleabite, couples counseling, midriffs, skinny bones, ursula, and sports coach.
Travis: I really like Rosie and the Rosies lately. Also been listening alot to Ferral Jenny. An old standby of mine is Big Mess, they’re one of my favorites. Nice Guys have always been one of my favorite Allston bands. I would recommend listening to Jesse Defrancesco’s music Good Nature too
AP: Any tips for surviving snowpocylpse in Allston?
LDR: stay inside 4 ever.
