What is Stompbox Sonic?
We bring a well curated selection of unique effects pedals and vegan guitar straps to Boston area musicians. Many handmade by small manufacturers around the country and from right here in Boston. Stompbox Sonic is all about providing the tools, a palette, for someone to create their own sound. You don’t have to be well versed in the circuitry that makes the pedals do what they do, you can be a seasoned player or just starting out; all that matters is finding the right pedal to inspire a riff, a song or a new band. It’s important that all musical adventurers feel included. A circuit bent Speak n’ Spell, synths and cello are just as welcome as Jazzmasters.
So what are Sound Tastings?
These events allow attendees a chance to test a wide array of boutique effects pedals before purchasing from us. What better way to find the perfect fuzz pedal than by comparing 5 of them side by side until you find the right one! Every couple months we commandeer a practice space, recording studio or other location, then unleash our pedals, amps and guitars. Stompbox Sonic has been a regular at Studio 52, the Berwick, Q Division’s annual yard sale and has taught classes at Ladies Rock Camp. Bands can also schedule a more personalized session. Mac from Superchunk had me bring a few delay pedals to sound check at the Paradise and Every Time I Die messed around with fuzzes during a break from recording up at God City Studios.
For me the connection between a musician and his/her gear is as important the chemistry among band mates. I want people to be inspired and to be able to explore their options.
Who are some of your favorite bands?
The Swirlies and Spore were the first two Boston bands that I was absolutely crazy about. Helium, Victory at Sea, Helms, Charlene, Betwixt, Wicked Farleys, Showcase Showdown, Gem Club, Polaris Mine, Hex Map, Reindeer, Tom Thumb, Damon & Naomi, the Operators, Neptune…This city is just packed full of incredible music.
