What are your station’s goals?
The goal of WRBB is to supply Northeastern and the surrounding community with music. We are a free-form station, so the type of music depends entirely on the DJ, but we have a little but for everyone: (Rock, Pop, Hip-Hop, Gospel, News, Country, and Sports talk, etc.)
How did WRBB get started?
WRBB has a long history; we just passed our 50th anniversary. In the 60s, WRBB started broadcasting to a few dorms, and since then has expanded to areas around campus, as well as online so that anyone in the world with internet access can tune in. We’ve always been student-run, too. Northeastern staff only gets involved when we are putting on a show, which happens once a semester. But everything broadcast-related is all students.
What does college radio mean to you?
College radio means a lot to me, but most of all, it is a symbol of individuality and freedom. At WRBB, unlike other college radio stations in the area, we don’t tell DJs what to play when. The only restrictions we have are related to FCC policies – otherwise it’s open to however you want your radio show to be. I believe being a campus radio DJ is one of the greatest experiences you can gain at college, and WRBB does it right.
Who are some of your favorite bands?
Favorite bands… this question is the bane of every music fan, but unavoidable. I think one band that I’ve held close throughout the years is Arctic Monkeys. They can do no wrong in my opinion. Some other recent favs include Skinny Bones, Sun Club, and that new Alt-J record is pretty slick.
What’s your favorite food spot in Boston?
My current favorite food spot in Boston (but I guess technically Brookline) is Zaftig’s Deli. It a little Jewish restaurant on Harvard Street that always hits the spot. I’m a fan of their latkes and they have a great selection of sodas (the Raspberry Lime Rickey is my go-to) and although I’m a vegetarian, I hear their Monte Cristo sandwich is amazing.
