Last Monday, MUNA made a triumphant return to Massachusetts for the first time in over two years. Playing to a sold-out crowd at The Sinclair, the LA-based trio showcased their second album, Saves The World.
Chelsea Jade primed the audience for a night of danceable yet lyrically introspective pop, with an animated performance that brought her through the crowd and up to the mezzanine to connect with listeners. MUNA came on strong with “Number One Fan” and “Stayaway,” a pair of newer songs that nevertheless induced the excited crowd to sing along loudly with every word. The band expertly guided the bouncing throng through the varied setlist of old and new material, and from (in their words) “emo songs to the bangers.” Audience members followed lead singer Katie Gavin’s example as she danced, jumped, and flailed throughout the night, while guitarists Naomi McPherson and Josette Maskin thrashed away alongside her. And fittingly, there was no encore break to disrupt the concert’s momentum. MUNA may have been away for a while, but they clearly haven’t missed a beat.
