The House of Blues was swarming with Billie Eilish fans when she stopped in Boston last week as part of her “1 by 1” tour. Supporters of the 16-year-old singer started lining up outside the Fenway venue as early as 11:00 in the morning. The hype was real.
Eilish’s brother and band mate, FINNEAS, opened for the sold-out show. FINNEAS is a music renaissance man: he co-produced Eilish’s EP Don’t Smile at Me in addition to performing as part of The Slightlys, a Los Angeles band. He also appeared on Glee and Modern Family at the start of his career. He was followed by Childish Major, an Atlanta native producer turned rapper. Throughout his set, Major bounced around the stage sporting a Harvard sweatshirt and performed songs such as “Happy Birthday” and “WOO$AH” off his latest album. He ended the set in an intimate performance with cell phones and lighters illuminating the crowd.
As soon as fans heard the instrumental beginning of “&burn,” the whole venue filled with screams. Eilish appeared behind an alien-like chrome platform and quickly started running around the stage as fast as she could. The singer barely remained still throughout her set, often leaning over the edge of the stage to get closer to her fans. She performed hits such as “Ocean Eyes,” “You Should See Me in a Crown,” and “idontwannabeyouanymore.” The high-energy performance set the bar high, and with Eilish being one of the younger singers on the Billboard Too Charts, odds are we’re going to see a lot more from Eilish soon.
