Despite it being the beginning of the work week, last Monday night’s show at Great Scott was one not to miss. The London four piece Black Midi headlined a three band bill, with support from Kal Marks and Rob Noyes.
Rob Noyes’ opening set featured him taking center stage alone, with just a 12 string acoustic guitar. Concert goers were respectful during the stripped down set, staying silent during Noyes’ quieter parts and focusing in on the performer. Noyes’ set was followed by local power trio Kal Marks, playing a set that showed off their varied sound, from louder more explosive tracks to their instrumental breaks, all of which resonated well with the audience. Long time fans were also pleased to hear a handful of new songs make it onto the band’s set.
Black Midi has been picking up a great deal of buzz online lately, despite the band being relatively new and having mostly untitled tracks. The group’s set was loud, tight, and overflowed with a captivating sort of energy. The show began with haunting choral music playing in the background during setup, which quickly changed to a more bass heavy electronic track as the four members walked on stage. Once the house music was cut the band began, and other than a brief mid-set “thank you” from singer and guitarist Geordie Greep, Black Midi played from beginning to end without any pauses or banter. Any remaining gaps in the crowd were quickly filled, forcing folks in the front to brace themselves against the stage’s monitors, with the room’s mosh pit to their backs, in order to stay on their feet for the lively performance.
