The 80’s had the Traveling Wilbury’s, and in 2018, when we needed it more than ever, we are lucky enough to have boygenius. The newly-formed supergroup consisting of musicians Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus performed their self-titled EP at the Orpheum last Thursday night.
Over the last two years, Baker, Bridgers, and Dacus have each garnered recognition for their individual work, having all put out stellar solo records on their own. It wasn’t until the three were scheduled to tour together that boygenius began to come to fruition. Plans to record a 7-inch quickly evolved into a full EP, which was released on Matador Records this past October.
So while boygenius was originally born out of a project for the tour, it’s hard to believe that the three musicians haven’t been perfecting their harmonies together for years. After each member performed solo sets with their respective bands, the night culminated with the three joining each other on stage and playing straight through the entire boygenius EP.
