Last Sunday night, JPEGMAFIA played to a sold out Great Scott with Joy Again. Long before the venue doors were open, fans were already lined up around the block, many dressed in JPEGMAFIA merch and all of them excited for the show.
Joy Again’s opening indie pop set was a hit amongst the packed crowd, with many folks who weren’t familiar with the five piece before that night leaving as fans. At one point during the set the crowd started a small pit, later giving the band their collective seal of approval in the form of thumbs up all around.
Without much gear to setup, JPEGMAFIA began to play shortly after Joy Again cleared their things off of the stage. The rapper’s performance was high energy beginning to end, making use of not only the entire stage, but much of the room as well. For significant stretches throughout the show, he would disappear into the crowd and then re-emerge from the pit of fans, still clutching the mic. The set included some tracks from his most recent release, Veteran, mixed with songs like “I Cannot Fucking Wait Until Morrissey Dies,” getting huge reactions from the crowd. The track “ALL CAPS NO SPACES” from 2016’s Black Ben Carson was also one of the more explosive moments of the night. The set closed out with “Baby I’m Bleeding,” leaving the sweaty mass of fans ecstatic.
