Last Thursday night, The Sinclair featured a sold out bill headlined by Wild Child, playing for the first time after nearly a month long stint, and opened by The Wild Reeds. Hailing from Los Angeles, The Wild Reeds brought a throwback 60’s and 70s singer-songwriter style to their performance with their five piece lineup, consisting of three incredible vocalists and a drum and bass duo. Throughout the night, the vocalists rotated stage positions, instruments, and even lead roles on songs. They opened with one of their better known tracks, “Capable,” from 2017’s The World We Built, starting the show off slow, not quite cutting through the back venue chatter. But within two minutes the whole venue was perfectly tuned in. As the show went on, The Wild Reeds’ captivating three part harmonies grew into a wall of sound as they played a solid 45 minute set, ending with the three front women belting out the final chorus to perfectly set the mood for the headliners.
Wild Child took to the stage around 10:00pm to great approval from the crowd. The seven members assumed their positions without a word, launching straight into “Alex” off their brand new LP, Expectations. The strumming of the ukulele sent a wave off ease through the crowd, inviting listeners to close their eyes and sway to the music. While heavily featuring their new album, Wild Child took the crowd through a tour of their entire catalog, with fairly drastic changes in direction (and genre influence) from song to song. Each track encompassed a unique arrangement of ukulele, horns, strings, or just the straight bone chilling pipes of front woman, Kelsey Wilson.
Three quarters through the set, the backing band left the stage, leaving just Wilson and Alexander Beggins behind. With the stage to themselves, the duo slowed things with a handful of acoustic songs, including 2011’s fan favorite “Pillow Talk.” Halfway through the song, the crowd took over the vocals, ending the song with a series of whoops and hollers of approval. This set the stage nicely for Wild Child’s final song of the night, the all too danceable “Think It Over,” with the crowd filling The Sinclair’s floor to full capacity and making it easy to imagine that on their next visit to Boston fans will see them moving up to a much larger venue.
