Poppy brought her new album I Disagree to life during a two night stay at Brighton Music Hall earlier this month. At the beginning of night two, many fans talked about how excited they were to see her for a second night in a row, and that getting tickets to both shows was a “no-brainer.”
The night began with Australian death pop group, VOWWS, who played a hypnotic set full of intense bass patterns and eerie melodies. The duo performed in long black trench coats and skull-like face makeup. Other than thanking Poppy for bringing them along on her tour, they remained quite quiet, and used their time to get the crowd excited and ready to rock with Poppy.
Poppy let the suspense build by having her band stand on the stage without her, and then made her entrance to deafening cheers. She kicked off the show with the first track on her new album titled, “Concrete,” which has haunting and unique lyrics like “cover me in concrete, turn me into a street.” The only thing more impressive than her performance and continued energy was the eccentric outfit only she could pull off: a full reflective silver jumpsuit with sky-high maroon combat boots.
Together, Poppy’s new album and look mark a total 180 from her previous music, which was defined by an aesthetic of pastels, muted tones, soft vocals, and a delicate persona. Looking back to her 2017 debut album, Poppy.Computer, which highlighted the quirky and robotic style she became famous for on YouTube, it’s clear that Poppy’s persona has progressed. Flash forward to 2020, and she is bringing down the house, playing to a sold-out crowd with her rebellious and emotionally raw new sound. Now three years out from her first album, Poppy has proved that she is more than just a short-lived Internet craze, and will likely be an even bigger star new time she comes to Boston.
