Saint Motel Packs the House at Royale (10/19)

dsc_6189

Los Angeles indie rockers Saint Motel recently played their first ever Boston show to a sold out crowd at Royale.  On the cusp of releasing their new album ‘saintmotelevision, order ’ Saint Motel entranced the audience with their unique blend of soulful indie-pop, ambulance at times bordering on Motown.  The band burst on to the scene four years ago with their debut album ‘Voyeur’ which showcased their ability to infuse elements of jazz and R&B in to indie-pop.  In 2014, their follow-up EP ‘My Type’ climbed the Top 40 charts in Europe and achieved platinum status in Italy.  Now the band has set out on a North American tour in support of their latest album ‘saintmotelevision.’  Their performance at Royale featured plenty of songs from the new album, which while it stays true to their sound, definitely shows a band that has grown since their first LP.  The set also featured plenty of favorites from their previous releases such as “Stories,” “Benny Goodman,” and the ever catchy, incredibly danceable “My Type.”

Touring with Saint Motel were noteworthy acts Hippo Campus (St. Paul, MN) and fellow L.A. rockers Weathers.  Weathers kicked off the night with a high energy set featuring their two latest singles “Happy Pills” and “I Don’t Wanna Know.”  Hippo Campus followed up with an equally impressive set with a sound resembling that of My Morning Jacket and Portugal. the Man.  Both bands proved with ease why they are on the road touring with a band like Saint Motel, and I will definitely keep an eye out for both next time they are in Boston.

Phantogram at the House of Blues (10/21)

phantogram-1

From the second Phantogram walked on stage, it was an immersive experience. The band completely dominated the huge House of Blues stage last Friday night with their deep and powerful yet still electronic-influenced sound. Phantogram stunned fans with their brilliant light show as well. Performing behind a curtain for the first few songs, lead singer Sarah Barthel took command of the stage without even being seen. When the curtain came down during “Turning Into Stone”, it was almost impossible to take you eyes off of. Their set was a good mix of new and old hits including “Mouthful of Diamonds”, “When I’m Small” and, of course, “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore” during the encore. It was interesting to see such a mix of heavy dark ballads and upbeat pop-influenced songs, and it made it a diverse set keeping attention throughout. Phantogram without a doubt does a magnificent job bringing every emotion possible onto the stage.

This or That // Margaret Glaspy

While Margaret Glaspy may not know John Cena or Snapchat, she knows how to make good fucking music. Similar to a lot of her responses in our This or That featured below, Margaret’s songs often appear blunt and to-the-point on the surface. However, there is an underlying warmth to her craft that proves to be omnipresent. This enchanting blend keeps listeners on their toes while simultaneously falling in love.

Veiny Hands Signs with BUFU, Premieres “Tonguing”

By Jackie Swisshelm
Veiny Hands

Out of the swamp and onto the surf comes a brand-spankin-new release by Veiny Hands, a four-piece Florida band from St. Pete. Out today via BUFU, their single “Tonguing” is the first official release from the band, and a terrific melting pot of dark, rumbling riffs, wailing but emotive vocals, and noisy bouts of post-punk for good measure.

While an arrangement like theirs might seem all too familiar, the musicians in Veiny Hands are truly somethin’ else. Consider vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Jasmine Deja, who is also active in a slew of other provoking, and more experimental projects like Soapbox Soliloquy. Similarly, Rod Olfo who takes lead vox, is also associated with Miami garage rock act Plastic Pinks. Not to mention it’s impressive how quickly and naturally Brie Denicourt took to her instrument of choice, the drums, considering she had never really played until band practice. Lastly, latecomer Xtina Sanchez on the keys provides an essential sound, one that feels both pacifying and formidable; a buzzing precipice; like the Gulf of Mexico at night.

Plus, BUFU Records reportedly, “couldn’t be more stoked to sign them.” That’s quite the compliment, keeping in mind that BUFU signs talented acts like IAN, Tall Juan, Gracie, and Free Pizza. Interested yet? Listen to “Tonguing,” streaming below via Soundcloud.

Eskimeaux and Japanese Breakfast Announce Tour

Look, we get that “getting 2 the gig” might’ve gotten to you.

We’re not faulting you if you were intently rearranging your rock collection back in May when we presented Eskimeaux at ONCE Ballroom nor are we about to chastise you for having to bathe your dog while cramming for midterms the other week when Japanese Breakfast rolled through with Porches.

Luckily, Eskimeaux and Japanese Breakfast announced a joint solo tour today, which will be arriving at the Middle East Upstairs on December 18. This matinee show falls right around most schools’ winter breaks, mid-pet rock hibernation season, and the peak months that dogsitters are seeking work*, so again, no judgements… but this one’s gonna be real good. For more info, including additional dates, check out the poster below.

Facial, Warpaint @ the Paradise (10/6)

Most shows share a few of the same components: an opener, a headliner, an audience, an aesthetic. But it’s the differences between these pieces that create a whole experience. On Thursday, October 6th, an LA-based indie-rock/jam-band called Warpaint headlined at the Paradise. Detailed below is one of these experiences.

Venue Vibes: A queue of jittery fans formed in front of The Paradise just before their doors opened at 8pm, one that extended past Goodwill, BurgerFi, City Convenience. As the clock struck eight, the line dwindled and as if it was exosmosis, fans slowly spilled into the two-tiered venue. The space was crowded, but accommodating– perfect for an intimate night surrounded by strangers.

Listeners: The Paradise definitely saw some dads in the audience last Thursday, but that’s to be expected from any kind of jam band. The rest were an assorted lot of listeners, varying in genders, ages, races, pot-smoking habits, and dancing abilities. But one thing was apparent about most everyone who came out to the ‘Dise that night: They were flippin stoked to see Warpaint. The crowd even enthusiastically welcomed the not-totally-on-genre openers. Overall, vibes were posi. And at some point in the night, if you were at that show, you were dancing.

Opener: Facial, a 3-piece, Sex Pistols-esque band from LA started their set around 9pm, with echoey, loud vocals and thrashing body movements. While any of the three could and did easily switch instrumental/vocal roles, some of their on-stage banter was not particularly endearing. For example, introducing a song with, “It’s gonna be pretty fun and aggressive,” does not get me stoked for it. But for a good mixture of the crowd up front by the stage, Facial provided a vigorous energy. They played a cover by Mad World by Gary Jules, and even then the crowd seemed into it. And by the end of their set, a few dads were seen getting groovy (if you wanted that mental image).

Stage presence: It’s always a good sign to see a band having a frickin’ blast together on stage. Taking turns on vocals and rotating different instruments during their set created a sense of equality and camaraderie among the quartet. In fact, this quality along with the band’s obvious perception of musicianship was what made Warpaint stand out. It was so cool to see bassist Jenny Lee Lindburg make faces at drummer Stella Mozgawa all while ripping sweet riffs. It was refreshing to see how friendship had manifested itself on stage between those four talented musicians, and to know that they are very much appreciated by their fans.

Sound/Arrangement: When four intimate and wildly talented friends– friends who aren’t afraid to have fun with their band– take the stage, the resulting sound is equally intimate and talented. Warpaint’s brand of psychedelic rock isn’t necessarily high energy, but songs from their newest album, Heads Up, definitely leave an impression. Seeing Mozgawa on drums was incomparable, even as she took to the MIDI pad on “Hi.” Lindburg played her Rickenbacker with a smooth complexity, and showed versatility when she switched to guitar on “So Good.” And even though Emily Kokal and Theresa Wayman took equal turns with lead vox and guitar, their individual sounds were defining, especially on songs like, “New Song,” and “Whiteout,” where both got a chance to shine. Overall, this notion is pretty representative of the foursome’s general sound: both unified and distinct.

Crowd Favorite: This one’s probably a tie between “Undertow” and “Elephants,” both off The Fool (2010). And on both, the crowd knew exactly which songs were starting after the first or second notes. Honorary mention goes to “Love Is To Die,” their successful single off 2014’s self-titled album.

Show Stopper: Warpaint’s overall sound didn’t vary too greatly Thursday night (or any other night)– every tune kind of just stuck with the moody, post-punk/jam band sound they’re known for. But the ninth song of their set, “Beetles” (off 2009’s Exquisite Corpse) was definitely a change of pace among the sixteen song long setlist. With opening lines like “Where am I, why can’t I just get it together? Fuck it, where’s my shit?” this song just brought up a more raw, punching sound comparatively.

PREMIERE: Weird Dane’s Ancient Alien

Weird Dane

Dark World, cialis a collective of young artists based in Western Mass, has been gaining notoriety for their off-kilter style of hip-hop. Their collection of lo-fi tracks and videos serve as an amalgam of the wickedness of early Three 6 Mafia, the spontaneous prolificity of Lil B and the ethos of DIY punk. That combination creates an overarching aesthetic across Dark World, where the end product is as infectious as it is disorienting.

Weird Dane has been part of Dark World since the beginning, working as not only a rapper but the mind behind the group’s eccentric music videos (which can be seen here and here). And we are thrilled to give you the exclusive digital premiere of his newest project Ancient Alien.

Ancient Alien is a family affair of Dark World talent, who further their ominous sound thru both production credits and features. Yet Weird Dane still makes the project his own, as he transitions from frantic double-time flows (“All Black”) to murky vocals (“All I See”)  to catchy melodies (“Foolish”). Over the course of the 14-track release, he proves that he is one of the most exciting voices coming out of Dark World.

Dane issued the physical release of Ancient Alien last month as a part of bundle currently available via LA-based artist platform SVNTYWNTY. In addition to the project on a USB disk card, the bundle also includes a booklet with art from Dane, a zine from SVNTYWNTY and stickers. And to keep up on other Dark World releases and merch, be sure to check out their site.
