And now, “Cross Your Mind”– the new single from a local artist who has rocked the ins and outs of Boston DIY since the mid aughties. The solo project from guitarist/vocalist Wes Kaplan, aka The Craters, exhibits bedroom style indie rock crossed with electronic editing (think: The Books), and this release embodies that meticulously crafted sound. Urgent, plucky bass and guitar lines on this track instantly pull listeners in. Add some echoey, layered, Nirvana-like vocals with an ever-growing sense of doom, and “Cross Your Mind” hits hard, even if it is just a stop between EPs recorded by Kaplan in the fall of 2017.
In just under 3 minutes, listeners can hear this artist’s knack for collaboration. Darl Ferm, also of Speedy Ortiz, slams on bass while Jesse Weiss provides noisy, necessary percussion. And the sound of collaboration is a cornerstone for this project, it seems. Since The Craters’ inception, talents from members of Tomboy, Truman Peyote, Fat History Month and Krill have slipped their way into the band’s sound. This new track just makes us wonder what kind of small, DIY release is next for an artist that goes as far back as the heyday of old show houses like Butcher Shoppe, Problem House and Gay Gardens. Not to mention, how Kaplan’s even keeping up with all these releases, considering his other band, The Channels (feat. Nick Baker and Ian Kovac formerly of Guerilla Toss) drop their album, Double Negative, tomorrow (4/27). Keep your ears to the ground with this one, Boston.
