Boston quartet Ex-Magicians have been power-pop machines since their birth a couple of years ago. First, there was their debut, 2012’s California Grass cassette release, then a double-sided digital single earlier this year. Now, Ex-Magicians are back with a 5-song EP entitled “Elegant Bastards.” The strength of this release comes mainly with its instrumental brawn. Chunky riffs on “We Talk Jazz” and “Time as Space Time” put the power in their brand of power pop, while matching with vocal ease, creating a vintage appeal that goes down smoother than a ‘Gansett tall. Their sound spans a number of different time periods, gaining influence from 70’s twin-guitar gems as much as angstier Gen-X staples. The quartet gains even more muscle in their latest recordings with the addition of drummer Mikey Holland, who also plays in Mean Creek and Trabants.
