I can almost guarantee you don’t have particularly stellar plans for next Tuesday night, because, let’s face it – it’s a Tuesday night in August, and it should probably be spent seeing how long  you can sweat it out on your couch watching SVU reruns before you finally give in and turn on the AC because it’s about a million degrees outside. Unless you’re seeing Miguel at the House of Blues, in which case you’re excused from this writer’s conjecture about your lifestyle.

But in all seriousness, a big way to elevate your night from uneventful to mildly mind-blowing would be to head to Great Scott to catch Northampton three-piece And the Kids in the first of a three-night residency at the Allston venue.

Fresh off a sophisticated-sounding debut LP release, not to mention a stop by the NPR offices to do a Tiny Desk Concert, And the Kids is a folk band that’s a little too electric to be folky, an effervescent pop band that’s a little too frenetic to be poppy, and an indie-rock band that wields a sound too big to be pigeonholed as just indie rock. There’s a lot of layers to the recorded material we’ve seen from this band, and it’s sure to play out in an exciting and moving live show that shouldn’t be missed if you can help it.

Supporting And the Kids on residency night one are local mainstays Horse Jumper of Love, who make loveable lo-fi acoustic songs reminiscent of Elliott Smith, but tend to pack a heavier, more electric punch when rendered live. Watch a recent Spare Room Session with HJOL from Fitz Ross Productions to get a better idea of their live act, here.

Rounding out the night and bringing the dance party will be New York queer punk duo PWR BTTM. Band members Ben Hopkins and Liv Bruce are huge, much-needed advocates for diversity in the punk scene, and beyond that, they’re making some of the best music in the genre right now. This is your chance to catch PWR BTTM while they’re still small, but trust me – they won’t be for much longer. Learn more about what they’re all about in our interview with them.

Tickets are $9 and you can buy them here – see you there?
