2013 saw a fresh array of debut albums, and one of the best of those debuts was The Courtneys The Courtneys, a fun look at surf pop from all the way over in Vancouver. The Courtneys are currently touring with Tegan & Sara. If you were at Boston Calling this weekend, you probably saw Tegan & Sara. If you didn’t. shame on you. They’re taking a break, but The Courtneys are playing their own gig Wednesday 5/28 at T.T. the Bear’s with local favorites Fat Creeps and Worcester’s Secret Lover. We got a chance to send The Courtneys some questions while they were busy having the time of their life on tour. Read up and watch their video for “Lost Boys” below.
Allston Pudding: When you put out a tape on Burger Records, what kind of burger did you celebrate with? Be as specific as possible.
Courtney: Veggie burger!
Jen: I did not celebrate with a burger! I’m more of a hotdog person.
Sydney: Turkey burger with bacon and blue cheese
AP: Tegan or Sara? Why?
C: Not fair! Both.
J: John Spence. [Editor’s note: John is the keyboardist for Tegan & Sara ICYMI FYI etc]
S: No comment.
AP: Did you work on new material before heading on tour? If yes, please continue. If no, your adventure stops here.
S: Yes, we are working on our next record. Almost done!
AP: Just kidding, either way here is another question: Vancouver Canucks or Vancouver Nighthawks?
C: Who are the nighthawks?? The Canucks are ok but my fave are the vancouver Canadians. We love going to baseball games, and we also have our own baseball team! Everyone has a Courtneys hat. Our tour manager Flip told me that we might get an NBA team again which is so cool. I don’t think we can beat the Grizzlies tho. Hopefully they come up with something badass.
AP: Your S/T album from last year has a strong ’80s Kiwi pop feel. How did y’all get into that stuff/what are your favorite bands from that scene?
J: I love Flying Nun! I think I got into kiwi bands back when I was living in Calgary. My friend Pat taught me how to play drums, AND showed me The Clean. He has had a big influence on my life.
S: I think Jen got me into flying nun when we were playing in our first band together, Puberty. From there I got into a more recent Australian band called Eddy Current Suppression Ring, who are a big influence.
AP: Have you toured through Boston before? What are you most looking forward to seeing in our beautiful and historic city?
S: I’ve played Boston before with an old band of mine called Just Friends. I didn’t get to see much of the city but I’m looking forward to checking it out this time! I’m into visual art so I’m gonna see what’s showing at the galleries.
J: We are stoked to see Fat Creeps!
The Courtneys with Fat Creeps and Secret Lovers is at T.T. the Bear’s Place on Wednesday May 28th. $10 | 8:30pm | 18+. See ya there!
