Doom wave is coming to Great Scott on Wednesday night, in the form of The Wytches. They’re spending all of July in America touring with Cloud Nothings and METZ, and ending the month with a few solo shows on the East Coast.
Their self-professed love for the Arctic Monkeys’ Humbug gleams its way through tracks like “Gravedweller” and “Burn Out the Bruise.” But expect a heavier, gritty set from Kristian Bell on vocals and guitar, Dan Rumsey on bass, and Gianni Honey on drums, all hailing from the south of England. Their first LP, Annabel Dream Reader, drops on August 25 and you’re sure to hear most of it at their show in Boston tomorrow night.
Allston Pudding called them up while they were traveling to St. Louis, MO, last week and talked to Bell about an array of topics, including recording with Bill Ryder-Jones from Coral, touring on Megabus, and Krist Novoselic.
Allston Pudding: You co-produced the new album with Bill Ryder-Jones from Coral. What was that like? Was this your first time producing your stuff?
Kristian Bell: “We’re big fans of Bill and Coral. it was just really nice to meet him and all his opinions and ideas were really valid and we worked well with him, we joked around. And we’d never done a studio album before but we kinda knew what we wanted to do, but we didn’t know how to go about it necessarily. So he was quite comforting because he’s done a lot of studio albums before, some of which were really successful and all of which are really good. So it was nice to have him there.
“He just contacted us. We had only put out one single at that point and he contacted us and I met up with him in Camden before a gig and we spoke about what we liked. Then after a couple months we went to Liverpool and recorded in a church. We did a couple demos in a church and that was really nice with the natural reverb.
“He played the organ on a piece as well, which is really nice. It just made the whole thing more comfortable.”
AP: Your tour with Cloud Nothings is wrapping up soon. What’s something you learned from this tour?
KB: “I think that is the last show with them [tonight in St. Louis]. Me and Gianni [drums] are big fans of theirs. They were really fast. They have pretty fast songs. Where as ours are very drainy and slow. So y’know it’d be nice to maybe do something a bit faster because they’re pretty fast. And cool to watch. Their drummer Jayson [Gerycz] is mad as well.”
AP: I know you used to tour on Megabus. What are some Megabus tips you have from that experience?
KB: “It’s really cheap and fairly comfortable, especially when you’re starting out and haven’t got a lot of money. The thing is it’s more comfortable than doing a tour on trains which we’ve done as well.
“All you really have to do is ask the venue if you can borrow an amp or something, but I think we took our amps with us but that was really difficult. Also try not to sit on the back seat. I don’t know why but no seat in front to kinda hide behind and have a sleep. I accidentally fell asleep on someone’s shoulder as well, a random guys shoulder. So try not to do that.”
AP: Will this be your first time in Boston?
KB: “There’s a Boston in England…. but yeah it is. We usually don’t have much time to check it out. If we get there with enough time to do things, we don’t really do much but we look around record stores and get food so I guess we’ll do that. Any record shops around?”
AP: Oh yeah I’d recommend In Your Ear and Armageddon. You should definitely check them out. Those seem up your alley.
KB: “Yeah sounds cool.”
AP: Why should people come to your show in Boston next week?
KB: “I don’t know, if they like heavy music, I guess. I don’t know really. I don’t know why I’d want to come to our show. I guess if they want to get the full gig experience and they like heavy music. I’m sticking to that answer.”
AP: People sometimes compare you to Nirvana. Which one of you is Krist Novoselic?
KB: “I don’t know really. I guess Dan would be in the sense that he plays the bass and he’s tall and gaunt.”
AP: So is he more of the politician in the group?
KB: “Ha no. I think Gianni is more of the politician, but I don’t think any of us really meet the characteristics of Krist Novoselic.
“He’s a cool guy though. He had a cameo in some film I saw before the Nirvana reunion stuff was going on. It was a film called World’s Greatest Dad with Robin Williams. It’s about a boy who accidentally kills himself from tying a belt around his neck and jacking off. And Robin Williams is the dad and the kid just really liked porn and everything and he’s at a porn stand and he’s looking at the porn magazines and he starts crying and Krist Novoselic comes over and gives him a hug. So that’s really weird.”
