Almost three months after releasing his newest album, Oh Yeah?, Steve Lacy came through to perform two nights of music in Boston at MGM Music Hall. Lacy’s third album explores a more electronic sound alongside rock and R&B, moving between juvenile humor and self-reflective thoughts.
In a similar fashion, the setlist mixed the new album with older releases, allowing fans from all eras to hear a song they’ve kept on repeat since day one. The first 10 tracks of Oh Yeah? were played in order, coinciding with the first half of his 10-song set. This choice created memorable moments, such as letting fans sing a crowd-powered introduction arranged by Lacy himself, having them harmonize a melody to cue the band to start “doom.”
As he wrapped up his new material, the room grew louder with every song. The audience didn’t stop there. For the second half of the set, tracks from his previous album, Gemini Rights, left both the stage and audience uncontrollable. While the performance pushed energy out into the crowd, the fans pushed right back, matching the speakers with the sheer power of singing their favorite songs in unison. Tracks like “Infrunami,” “Bad Habits,” and “Dark Red” left the audience gasping for breath as they screamed every last word.
Closing out the night, Lacy returned to two newer tracks, “the feeling” and “oh yeah?”, for an encore. After such a demanding setlist, fans made one final push to share those last two songs with him, turning the room into a performance of its own. Fans left catching their breath and talking about how unforgettable the night was.
For Steve Lacy, this was night one of two at MGM Music Hall at Fenway. Boston showed up, spirits lifted high, leaving no doubt that he’ll be welcomed back with voices just as strong, if not stronger next time.
