SXSW 2015 Interview: BOYTOY

Converse invited us to check out their Rubber Tracks pop-up studio at SXSW 2015. While at the studio, we spoke with members of the Rubber Tracks team, and interviewed some of our favorite bands who have been involved with Rubber Tracks. The following article is one of a series of interviews we conducted. The rest of the articles and our SXSW 2015 coverage can be found here.

We got to chill with our buds in ex-Boston now-Brooklyn rock trio BOYTOY outside of the Converse Rubber Tracks studio in Austin, Texas during South By Southwest. See what they had to say below, and be sure to stream their tunes while you read for maximum crunch.

AP: Where are you right now?
Glen: We’re in Austin, Texas, right outside of the Converse Rubber Tracks studio.

AP: Is this your first time at South By Southwest? How’s it been so far?
Glen: It’s been really fun!
Saara: Yeah it’s been good. We’ve had two shows at Hotel Vegas, and then today we have three, tomorrow we have two, then I think we have one more.
Glen: Yeah, this year we definitely have the most shows.
Saara: We also have a car this year, so it’s been much better getting around. It seems like there are a lot more people on the east end this year..
Glen: Plus we have Matt this year, which has been great.
Matt: Yeah. Cause I’m great.

AP: What do you think of Austin as a city?
Saara: I’ve only been here for Southby so this is my only vision of the city, but it’s nice. The weather’s good, it’s nice and humid
Glen: Everyone’s really friendly too
Matt: It’s a nice change of the fast paced New York bull crap.
Saara: There be no bull crap in Austin!
Matt: I like it though, the food is great, the barbecue is great… infact I’m tryin to get some more barbecue right after this!

AP: What’s the best food you’ve eaten down here?
Matt: I had amazing catered barbecue earlier. The word “Salt” was in the name so you know it had to be good.
Glen: We went to a place called Magnolias Cafe which was really good. And I think these Converse tacos were really good too.
Saara: Sure were!

Glen: Yeah, we saw Thee Oh Sees, they were really really great. Natural Child played Hotel Vegas yesterday… Gymshorts we saw and got to hang out with Yesterday too
Saara: American Sharks, Surfboard, Dirty Fences..
Matt: There’s so many.. Lost Boy. The big dudes are out too.. Action Bronson
Saara: King Tuff
Matt: Dipset tonight.. I’m actually literally trying to go to that… it’s going to be sick.

AP: Word! So tell us a little bit about your involvement with Rubber Tracks
Saara: We recorded our first single “Visits” which was an awesome opportunity. We weren’t ready for an album yet, but we had the song and we were able to go in in Brooklyn and record there with Aaron. It was great, we had a whole day. Everyone was super friendly and accommodating, the equipment was all great and the room was super nice and comfortable. Good vibes, everyone is just into making something for the sake of the art of it.
Glen: It’s a cool program.

AP: High tops or low tops?
Saara: High tops!
Glen: High tops.
Matt: We have a mix, I’m doing lows today. I usually do highs.
Glen: I like the easy in easy out with the lows.
Matt: Yeah, lows are easy access.

AP: Favorite color?
Saara: I usually go whites but I decided to go blacks this time.
Matt: I had all blacks, but I’m wearing reds right now. Good to go out of the box every once in a while.
Glenn: Out of the shoe box!

AP: Sweet. What’s next for you guys?
Saara: We just recorded an album that should be out in the summer time, and then we’re gonna tour. Wherever wind takes us.
Glen: Wherever they will have us, we will go.
