Violet Grohl made her way to Crystal Ballroom on September 24, headlining in support of her debut album Be Sweet To Me. The sold-out show attracted rock fans across a broad range of ages.
The evening began with an opening set from Suzy Clue, who infused her moody, seductive performance with a fearless energy. Violet Grohl offered a comparatively understated presence during her headline set, emphasized by her few soft-spoken talking breaks. Apparently not one for showboating, Grohl spent much of her time behind the mic with her eyes closed as she sang. The music, however, was decidedly less subdued. Fans ate up the performance of Be Sweet To Me played almost in full except for “Mobile Star.” They were instead treated to “Swallowtail,” a song so far only available on a Record Store Day exclusive 7” B-side, and an unreleased new song, “Sun Is Blind.”
With just a 13-song setlist, Violet Grohl’s headline show was over somewhat quickly, ending before 10:00 pm. With such a strong show of support for the up-and-comer, it seems likely she’ll be back again before too long.
