How to Ripen A Peach is a three movement song set for mezzo-soprano, clarinet, contrabassoon, and piano written by June Violet-Aino and performed by Clara Zornado (Lady Queen Paradise), Shannon Leigh, Kristen Powell, and Marissa Levy. June is known for being the trombonist and pianist in the active punk band Space Camp, but in addition to playing in Space Camp they’re also a new-music composer. You can see June in our session with Space Camp here.
How To Ripen a Peach is a personal, three movement new music piece based in part off the a zine of the same name, written by Chicago-based poet Peach Gallant. “How to Ripen a Peach is completely inspired by two very close friends; Peach Gallant and Clara Zornado,” June says. “These two create their own completely individual and awe-inspiring art. Having the opportunity to utilize these skills in one work has been an honor. Two of my favorite poems from Peach make up the text, and as I would read every word, Clara’s musical approach and style was, in my mind, screaming along.”
The performance and recording of the piece was completely crowdfunded. The final recording of the piece can be seen on our YouTube channel. You can view it below!
