PHOTOS: Ron Gallo Throws a Birthday Party in Brighton Music Hall

Rock and roll isn’t dead, it’s wearing a yellow jumpsuit and yelling at you about life’s biggest questions over distorted garage-punk riffs and funk-tinged bass lines. Last Sunday night, rock and roll took over Brighton Music Hall as Philly-raised and Nashville-based Ron Gallo graced the cramped stage. Currently touring in support of his October release, Stardust Birthday Party, Gallo was joined by openers TWEN and Ian Ferguson.

Gallo brought along his usual sense of humor as he billed the show as an actual birthday party and began the set by singing happy birthday to a fan. Throughout the night, the band played with a strong energy that kept the crowd fully engaged, even after two openers on a Sunday night. One of the highlights of the show was the guest appearance of Chiara, Gallo’s girlfriend and tour documentarian, on backup vocals for the final song of the main set, “Love Supreme (Work Together!).” Her physical energy brought a new dynamism to the stage that seeped into the performances of the rest of the band as well.

After acknowledging the pointlessness of encores, Gallo stayed on stage to close the set with three more songs, starting with a cover of Frank Sinatra’s “Somethin’ Stupid,” which he hopped into the crowd to sing. Taking it back to his debut, LP Heavy Meta, Gallo ended the birthday party with his single “Young Lady, You’re Scaring Me,” followed by album closer “All the Punks Are Domesticated.”
