On November 22, we hosted our 13th show since beginning the Boston chapter of the Sofar Sounds movement in September 2013. This show was hosted by the the Berklee College of Music at their loft space, and featured three acts made up of current Berklee students and recent grads.
First up was the harp and fiddle duo of Jenna Moynihan and Mairi Chaimbeul. Their expert playing and unique instrumentation were the perfect mix for a Sofar show, and the crowd hung on every note as they played through both tradition Appalachian and Scottish tunes while mixing in some original songs.
The second act for the evening was the acoustic bluegrass quartet Damn Tall Buildings. Their loose demeanor and rambunctious playing were a stark contrast from the prior performance, which is a perfect example of how we love to keep its audiences on their toes. Their set culminated in a singalong with the crowd, which only seemed appropriate after a series of songs that induced plenty of foot-stomping and hand-clapping.
The final act of the evening was Night Lights, an indie pop band who could be considered a global all-star band of sorts. With members hailing from Mexico, Japan, Norway, and California, Night Lights’ diverse lineup delivered a set full of catchy melodies coupled with lush layers of sound.
