She & Him took to the stage at Boston’s Wilbur Theater on September 24th for their reunion tour, the Pump Up The Volumes Tour. True to its title, the band (actress and singer Zooey Deschanel and singer-songwriter M. Ward) played a mix of tracks from their three main albums (Volume One, Volume Two, and Volume 3). They started with upbeat tracks, including “I’ve Got Your Number, Son” and “I Was Made for You.” Notably, during the latter song and “Don’t Look Back,” they invited musician Keith Hollis on stage to accompany them. Looking around the theater with her famous wide blue eyes, Deschanel proclaimed, “I love this venue; it looks like a wedding cake. Let’s get married, all of us.”
During an acoustic portion of the set, Deschanel and Ward’s band surrounded the mic in a barbershop quartet fashion to perform a cover of the Beach Boys’ “Darlin” and “Black Hole.” During this section, Deschanel and Ward also improvised during a cover of Harry Warren’s “Would You Like To Take a Walk?” Deschanel sang to Ward, “But in Boston, does it rain?” To which Ward replied, “Yes, it does.” Deschanel later clarified, “It’s very nice to be back in Boston. I like this weather.” Someone in the crowd shouted, “What’s your favorite season?” Deschanel initially replied, “Fall.” Moments later, tossing her hair, she added, “…and summer,” a nod to her character from 500 Days of Summer.
With Deschanel’s mouth trumpeting and constant, enthusiastic tambourine-playing, and Ward and Jordana’s (their opener) musical chemistry on their respective guitars, the band easily endeared themselves to the crowd all evening. Jordana joined the band onstage for several songs throughout the show, including “Never Wanted Your Love” and “I Could’ve Been Your Girl,” where she and Deschanel performed a charming, choreographed two-step-type dance. Their voices blended beautifully, and they clearly enjoyed sharing the stage. As the show came to a close, Jordana stayed onstage with Deschanel and Ward to perform the band’s viral track “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here,” a perfect way to end the evening. Although this tour had a short run, one can only hope the band will reunite soon, perhaps with new music to bring to the stage, since they are certainly a treat to see live.
