Bent Shapes. Charly Bliss. Chandos. Fucko. That should be the only line you need to read to strap on your snow boots and trudge to O’Brien’s this Saturday. Besides, what better way to celebrate National Sleep in Public Day than in the traditional punk spirit of defiance?
While we here at Pudding follow journalism 101 with pure objectivism, sometimes even we can’t contain our giddy love for bands. So, if you still need convincing (in which case, you have no soul), we’ve compiled some good ol’ Allston Pudding fangirl and boy moments—when we just couldn’t get enough of these bands:
Bent Shapes
Our favorite fangirl moment for Bent Shapes comes from the time our beloved staff writer Nick Canton fell head over heels for the band…
“Their music is great, catchy, inoffensive indie rock. When I say inoffensive, that’s not a dig. I just mean it’s palatable and could be used in an Apple commercial and on the soundtrack of a Juno remake. I guess that still sounds like a dig, but it’s totally not. Their sound captured some of the best parts of Vampire Weekend, Pavement, and Rilo Kiley. And the whole thing wasn’t inoffensive: “Brat Poison,” a fun highlight of the set, was an experimental punk-rock thrasher.”
…over…
“I was still thinking of ditching halfway through–by the time they got up it was getting kind of late and it was a Sunday night. I was like “I’ll totally just stay until they play Big Machines,” which has been stuck in my head since the other time I saw them. They played it second and then I remembered that I’m not dead and only kind of old and I stayed through and saw the whole show. It was a ton of fun.
“Bent Shapes play poppy and rocky pop-rock. Without checking, I think I probably described them as something you’d hear on an Apple commercial in my last Fall review. I know I used that line twice and they would’ve fit the bill.”
“Bentshapesbentshapesbentshapes, I probably don’t need to gush about Bent Shapes on this site anymore. I will a little, because it was a tight show and there were a few songs I hadn’t heard which were fantastic.”
Chandos
We once described Allston-based Chandos, formerly known as Chandeliers, as “lo-fi pop rock for your face.” That about sums it up, but our love was truly professed when we listed the group in our 50 Most Anticipated Albums of 2015.
This quickly resulted in staff writer Nina Corcoran keeping the love alive: “As soon as they signed to Carpark Records, it was clear Chandos were destined for great things in 2015.” You heard the woman. Now go see those great things up close and personal.
Charly Bliss and Fucko
Okay, we must confess. Allston Pudding hasn’t quite had its freak out moments over Charly Bliss or Fucko just yet, but that’s not to say its not warranted. In the meantime, check out their music and for a fangirl—or boy—moment of your own:
