Even Bostonians completely disengaged from local politics know one thing about Mayor Marty Walsh. He’s the guy that got the T to run until 3a.m.! That’s right Scooter, and developing Boston’s late night culture has been one of many focal points for Walsh’s administration. Specifically, Walsh wants to extend last call from 1am to 2:30 am, and allow local bars to stay open until 4am. Keep your taps and tabs open everyone, because there are plenty of good decisions to be made after 2am.
Back in March, Walsh appointed several local bar and restaurant owners to a newly created “Late Night Task Force” with the goal of “fostering a safe and vibrant late-night culture.” This Late Night Task Force looked into the legal and economic potential for a later last call, and concluded that a later night could make Boston more attractive for foreign tourists.
However, this morning The Boston Globe reported that the State Senate Budget omitted the provision that would have extended closing time to 4am. Bad news for the bar scene, good news for families according to the lawmakers who opposed Walsh’s provision. Walsh’s opposition argued that a later last call would diminish the quality of life for bar-heavy residential areas, and increase the incidents of drunk driving.
Wether or not Walsh continues to advocate for a later evening is something that anyone involved in the various late-night Boston scenes will want to keep an eye on. Unfortunately, and relevant to many, Walsh has yet to weigh in on allowing citizens to shot gun cheap beer behind their favorite venue.
What do you, the lovely reader of Allston Pudding, think about extending Boston’s last call?
