Navigating the stars is hard. A couple weird astrology enthusiasts at Allston Pudding are here to help. Let us provide you with monthly synchronous soundtracks and planetary advice along the way.
September Planetary Overview:
Sep 1 5:03AM New Moon / Solar Eclipse in Virgo
Sep 9 7:18AM Jupiter enters Libra
Sep 16 3:05PM Full Moon / Lunar Eclipse in Pisces
Sep 22 1:30AM Mercury goes Direct
Sep 22 10:21AM Sun enters Libra
Sep 23 10:51AM Venus enters Scorpio
Sep 27 4:07AM Mars enters Capricorn
Sep 30 8:11PM New Moon in Libra
Wtf it means:
It takes Jupiter 12 steady years to transit the entire Zodiac, so you best believe that its transition from Virgo to Libra is gonna have an expansive influence on all of us, and we’ll feel the impact for the next year. Libra’s balanced and harmonious effects will also be felt across charts when the Sun’s shift and the Autumn Equinox overlap on the 22nd. Until Mercury comes out of retrograde and Mars enters Capricorn later on in September, roads might get bumpy in terms of communication and energy levels. The eclipses won’t be an easy experience, either. Wholesome Virgo will encourage weeding out toxic people, places & things from your life, while escapist Pisces is gonna make things personal and bring a ton of issues to light. Other than that, you should prep for Venus’s shift into passionate Scorpio, which should bring some much-needed honesty but also probably drama. After all that, the new moon in Libra will provide good vibes and round everything out.

Aries
Aries (Ruling Planet: Mars; Element: Fire) If you’re a typical Aries, you’re a risk-taker. You’re a fire sign, so you’re adventurous, brave, and lively — all traits that attract others to the Ram, although most find it hard to keep up. You’re always down to try new things. You impulsively take up a new projects and yet still find the time to be passionate about them. However, Aries, you can be quite arrogant, thinking that you know everything, and you tend to be insensitive, impatient and stubborn, even to the point of being confrontational. Your motto is, “Act first, ask questions later.”
Jupiter moves over to Libra on September 9th, and for you, this means a total social expansion over the next year, including meeting tons of new people, playing more of a peacemaker, and strengthening any existing romantic relationships — but only if you stay on top of it. With both the Sun and a new moon occurring in Libra at the end of the month, and with the help of intense Scorpio’s influence on Venus, the passion you have for your relationships will only be emphasized. Then, your ruling planet (Mars) shifts into calculated Capricorn, signaling a good time to suss out your long-term goals. Things might get weird in the realm of work when Mercury retrogrades briefly this month, but don’t worry too much, and be sure not to start a completely new project until the 22nd when the retrograde ends. Lastly, the two eclipses will give off some potent energy this month. Especially look for the lunar eclipse on the 16th, which marks a time for a big release and facing subconscious issues.
Your September Trax: To kick off Libra’s year in lucky Jupiter and your time of social expansion, why not getchu something you (and your new pals) can to sing-a-long to? Locals The Color and Sound’s Peace of Mind is just anthemic and folk-rocky enough. There’s always Goodness, this year’s release from Worcester band, The Hotelier.

Taurus
Taurus (Ruling Planet: Venus; Element: Earth) The textbook Taurus is generous, dependable, and down to earth. Persistence and patience are key virtues to a Taurus, thus, you rarely encounter failure. But change is hard for you. Although you generally have an easy going attitude, you are stubborn and demanding when you are being rushed or pressured. Also known for being self-indulgent and lazy, you tend to all-too-easily ignore others’ emotions. It’s also easy for you to become materialistic and possessive, and often jealousy is a common downfall for the Bull.
Charming Libra certainly has its astrological influences this month, with Jupiter, the Sun, and a new moon shifting into the air sign and bringing good vibes if you’re tryna get a new job, pet, or health routine. Plus, the effect of the eclipses, especially the lunar eclipse on the 16th, will fuel your commitment to your dreams, or help you discover a new dream. Lovely Venus occurs in the sign opposite yours on the Zodiac on the 23rd, and Scorpio will help you focus on company and commitment. Five days later, energizing Mars is in Capricorn, and the location in this earth sign will revitalize you and signal a good time to travel or go back to school. There’s a brief spout of Mercury in retrograde from the start of the month til the 22nd, so communication might get cloudy or downright childish, especially with loved ones. If you can wait it out, things won’t seem so messy.
Your September Trax: If you want to keep that revitalizing energy a’buzzin without overdoing it, listen to something like Connecticut fuzz pop band furnsss. For something a little heavier, a little more Philly, JANK might be what you’re looking for. And for a reliable Punk Lite™ option, try Boston’s own Fat Creeps.

Gemini
Gemini (Ruling Planet: Mercury; Element: Air) Out of all the signs, you, Gemini, are the most communicative, on top of being the most clever. The Twins are flexible; you can adjust to any situation. Your enthusiasm for a variety of subjects makes you versatile and charming, but it’s hard for you to stay dedicated to one thing for a long time, and you tend to bite off more than you can chew. You suffer from constant FOMO, and you can’t make a decision to save your life.
The good news is that Jupiter and the Sun occur in fellow charismatic air sign Libra this month, provoking some loving, inspired, generous, and fun energy that you can use to start a creative venture and reconnect with any romantic partners. The bad news is your ruling planet, Mercury, retrogrades until the 22nd, and might cause you to lose your grip. Thankfully, both of the eclipses this month will help you focus on strengthening your emotional foundation. Not to mention, the new moon that occurs in your love sector on the 30th will be there to lighten things up. Don’t shy away from taking pleasure in the mundane, especially as the planet of love (Venus) shifts into watery Scorpio on the 23rd. If you’ve been puzzling over an issue, wait until Mars is in reliable Capricorn on the 27th to try ‘n solve it.
Your September Trax: You might need to look inward to focus on strengthening your emotional core, and there’s a lot of easy, soothing lo-fi music by LOVING to help you along with that. Or, just click play on gobbinjr’s cynical dream pop album, manalang. For something a bit folkier, Slow Club released a thing last month, and the duet’s skilled lil’ British voices are both more British and more Americana than ever.
Dates to watch: 3rd, 4th, 30th
Your events: Allston Pudding Presents: Elvis Depressedly, Teen Suicide @ ONCE, Sept. 3rd
Boston Live Band Emo/Pop-Punk Karaoke @ Mid East Up, Sept. 4th
Vundabar, The Midriffs, Bat House @ Brighton Music Hall, Sept. 30th
Ladyfest Boston Benefit: Wet Nurse, Halfsour, Blessed State, Second Becky @ Trixie's Palace, Sept. 30th
Cancer
Cancer (Ruling Planet: Moon; Element: Water) Everyone says you’re overly emotional, Cancer. And it’s true. But your emotions also fuel every aspect of your otherwise creative, intuitive, spontaneous, loving and protective personality. And you are generally a faithful friend, Moonchild. You motivate and persuade others easily. But the Crab is moody and unbalanced. You fluctuate between clingy and icy, depending on your mood and how pessimistic you’re feeling that day.
No doubt you’re ruled by your emotions, Moon Child, and when Jupiter tours Libra, the tendency to use heart before head will take full reign. But if you have a solid support system, this planetary position can guide you through some tough feelings you might not have been able to work out before now. Later in the month, the Sun and a new moon are also touched by magnetic Libra, so you may feel more inclined to chill out in your comfort zone -- a good time to work on home improvements. Most of the other planetary positions this month will fuel your need for balance and fairness, especially when it comes to your relationships. Make time for the ones you love, but don’t be surprised if you find it harder than usual to communicate with them while Mercury is in retrograde til the 22nd. Lastly, the solar and lunar eclipses on the 1st and 16th, respectively, will obviously influence the Moon Child more than most. Use the energy from the solar eclipse to put your feelings into action, and the lunar eclipse to let go of any self-limiting thoughts -- you don’t need ‘em.
Your September Trax: You need to be prepping and taking care of yourself and your surroundings right now, before you launch feelings and ideas into action. The 2008 self titled album by Little Joy is good simple music to precede a big moment. Similarly echoey and a little more lo-fi and impassioned, Northampton artist Mal Devisa has a 2014 album, 4U, that will definitely satisfy.
Dates to watch: 5th, 6th, 7th
Your events: Eryn Allen Kane, Gallant @ Sinclair, Sept. 6th
IAN SWEET (LP Release Show), Horse Jumper of Love, iji, Kal Marks, Lina Tullgren @ Mid East Up, Sept. 6th

The Ferdy Mane, Bellwire, Workman Song @ Plough and Stars, Sept. 7th
Leo
Leo (Ruling Planet: Sun; Element: Fire) Another energetic fire sign, you are known for your headstrong pride and dominating ego. But the Lion can also be quite affectionate, not to mention a loyal friend who demands the loyalty in return. In fact, you demand a lot of things. You can be impatient and arrogant when others won’t alter their opinions at your request, but are sensitive to anything that could wound your ego. You like to talk big game, Leo, but more often than not, you go home crying.
First things first: The solar eclipse in practical Virgo on the 1st will create vibes practically perfect for improving old ideas, especially old financial ventures. Just don’t start a new project until Mercury is out of retrograde on the 22nd. There’s also a lunar eclipse on the 16th, and it’ll be a powerful one. You should harness Pisces’ intuitiveness while the energy of the moon brings some difficult, personal issues to light. With the planet of love touring Scorpio later this month, you may crave comfort and familiarity. Lastly, the energy from Mars shifting into motivated Capricorn on the 27th, along with Jupiter, The Sun and a new moon in Libra will cause your mental energy to surge and new ideas to take hold throughout the month. My only advice: Work on opening up communication and don’t over-commit.
Your September Trax: If there’s one genre that can harness old ideas, and propel them forward, it’s vaporwave. That’s where Portland’s Macintosh Plus comes in. Of course, a vaporwave rec would be remiss without mentioning Saint Pepsi’s Gin City. But Prom King is a newer project by the artist, who now goes by Skylar Spence, and it’s a littler easier, not going too hard in any particular direction other than electronic. And keep a lookout for the Stranger Things soundtrack creators’, who go by S U R V I V E, Sept. 30th release.

Virgo
Virgo (Ruling Planet: Mercury; Element: Earth) You’re a natural problem solver, Virgo, and you are extremely practical. Your intelligence, trustworthiness, and attention to detail usually make you the best person for the job. You’re adaptable, for an Earth sign. You’re also analytical, sometimes to a fault. You can be overly critical and a harsh perfectionist, but only because you’re afraid of exposing your own vulnerabilities.
The Sun, the moon, and the planet of fortune, Jupiter, all shift out of your sign this month, and into the next one on the Zodiac-- Libra. During these happenings, you may notice a slowing down throughout the month, an emphasis on remaining stable (especially financially), and taking time to relax. Mercury is in retrograde in Virgo while the solar eclipse also occurs in your sign on the 1st, providing the perfect energy for second chances -- think about something you’d like to re-do, and go for it. The lunar eclipse a couple weeks later signals a make-or-break moment in regard to any romantic relationships. Speaking of romance, open dialogue with your lover will be important while the planet of love shifts into sensitive Scorpio on the 23rd. On the 27th, Mars will be in another earth sign, Capricorn, and it’ll feel good to take time for whatever hobby makes you happiest.
Your September Trax: Getchu some music to match this natural slowing of energy this month. Bon Iver’s new album 22, A Million, out Sept. 20th via Jagjaguwar, should do the trick. If you just can’t wait that long, be sure to try Annie Eve’s acoustic instrumentals, accompanied by her intimate voice and heavy, intricate, looping beats. Of course, there’s always this James Blake track from May.

Libra
Libra (Ruling Planet: Venus; Element: Air) You, Libra, are the charming, tactful one. You have a magnetism about you. Socially, you are gifted. You can talk your way out of anything, and justice is a valued virtue to The Scales. But like most air signs, you can become detached and unreliable. You’re so indecisive sometimes that, more often than not, you bail completely, and you don’t do well with confrontation.
It’s all you, baby!!! Don’t limit yourself this month, ‘cause the Sun, Jupiter, and a new moon will all converge with your sign, providing you with some truly optimistic energy. Be a little selfish for once and make your wants and needs a priority, especially if you’ve been waiting for the “right time” to start something. Other than that, the planet of love will encourage you to indulge in your senses when it tours sensitive Scorpio on the 23rd. Later, energetic Mars appears in Capricorn and will put a focus on managing your feelings and improving your surroundings. Any project you start now should successfully culminate in about a year, if you stick with it. Just be wary of the influence Mercury in retrograde throughout most of the month, and don’t be surprised if old issues resurface. The solar eclipse in Virgo should help with letting go of old baggage, though, and the energy of the mid-month lunar eclipse will help you eliminate any other bad habits.
Your September Trax: For a month with so much good energy, you deserve music that gives off the same. For your energizing needs, Boston gives you dream pop darlings, Mini Dresses. Similar, but surfy, a Seattle trio called Tangerine might give you the same light-hearted, yet motivating effect. Music by Lucius is a little poppier yet a little weirder, and could definitely help kick-start an innovative undertaking.

Scorpio
Scorpio (Ruling Planet: Pluto; Element: Water) Scorpios are truly a mixed bag. You can be passionate, but resentful. You can be ambitious and determined, but manipulative in the process. And although the Scorpion is one the most faithful of the signs, you struggle with trust and possessiveness, with forgiving and forgetting. However, Scorpio, you are still indeed a true water sign— sensitive and intuitive. And your emotional strength is what sets you apart from every other sign.
While friends, activism, and individuality might’ve been your focus over the past year, Jupiter’s leaving Virgo and entering Libra, closing that chapter and helping you clear out clutter -- literally and figuratively. Especially while the Sun also transits Libra on the 22nd and the new moon occurs in the air sign on the 30th, you can benefit from working behind the scenes, on using your intuitions, and on being more compassionate. Mercury ends its retrograde on the 22nd, opening up more avenues for clear communication and ideas. Capricorn-y vibes can only fuel your drive to complete small projects, especially those related to community, a sibling, or neighbor, when Mars transits the earth sign. Venus in your sign will have you feeling more attractive and romantic than usual, and you might want to take this opportunity to indulge in all the attention you’ll get around the 23rd. Lastly, September seems to be eclipse city, and the solar eclipse in Virgo on the 1st will be the perfect time for second chances on old dreams. The lunar eclipse on the 16th (in fellow water sign, Pisces) could make you more emotional, but some intense creative vibes come with that, so… Worth it.
Your September Trax: Emotional and intense moments await you! Why not have a soundtrack that suits them? Psychopomp by Philly’s Japanese Breakfast is indie rock that swells and builds in sound and emotion. Similarly, L.A. artist Miya Folick has music that starts slow, and ends up swallowing the room.
Dates to watch: 15th, 16th
Your events: Overkill River, Landlady @ The Sinclair, Sept. 15th
Blind Pilot, River Whyless @ Royale, Sept. 16th
Sagittarius
Sagittarius (Ruling Planet: Jupiter; Element: Fire) Sagittarians are crazy fun, and wild. You’re a generous friend, and always try to be straightforward. The Archer is an intellectual, passionate about philosophy and travel. But with this passionate energy, and your constant need for independence, comes a carelessness typical of most fire signs. When honest, you tend to be tactless. When ambitious, you can be impatient and inconsistent. And you are prone to taking things for granted.
Jupiter is your ruling planet, so you should probably pay attention to its shift this month from Virgo to Libra. Now, you can expand on all the progress that you’ve made in the past year-- with your career, social circle, and life path-- and opportunities for expansion will increase two-fold within the next year. The Sun joining Libra on the 22nd, and a new moon in the sign on the 30th, will help with new social expansion and opportunities. In fact, the moon’s influence this month is quite potent and a solar eclipse in Virgo on the 1st will have you seriously giving out second chances. Then, there’s a lunar eclipse in Pisces that will require comfort and familiarity as you try to let go of some emotional baggage, including people who just aren’t there for you when you need ‘em. But don’t make any big changes until Mercury is out of retrograde on the 22nd. Romantic relationships can get pushed to the backburner while Venus is in Scorpio around the end of the month, and your drive to immediately git shit done will taper off as Mars transits Capricorn on the 22nd.
Your September Trax: This month, it’s important to reflect on your choices in the last year, especially your choice of friends. So listen to old songs that you find comfort in. Something like Wilco’s new album, Schmilco, out on Sept. 9th via dBpm might be suitable. Better yet, this song by Chance the Rapper is the most comforting thing I’ve listened to in years. Or consider another classic, Hilary Duff’s 2003 smash hit Come Clean.
Dates to watch: 17th, 18th
Your events: Car Seat Headrest, Lucy Dacus @ The Sinclair, Sept. 17th
Tuxis Giant, Bear Salon, The Head Headband @ O'Brien's, Sept. 18th
Strike Up The Bands feat. Shepherdess,Thrust Club, Puppy Problems, Viva Gina, Somerville Ukulele Club, American Echoes, Lady Pills, Gracie Givertz @ Highland Ave between School St & Lowell St, Sept. 18th
Danny Brown, Maxo Kream, Zelooperz @ Paradise Rock Club, Sept. 19th
Capricorn
Capricorn (Ruling Planet: Saturn; Element: Earth) Another practical Earth sign, Capricorns are more calculated than most. You are also a natural goal-setter, and tend to get what you want by being sensible, patient, cautious and disciplined. The Seagoat is not a rule-breaker. And, sometimes, all this hard work can make you pessimistic, stubborn, and shy.
Jupiter tops your solar chart this month when it leaves earthy Virgo and enters magnetic Libra, meaning you too will reach new heights in terms of accomplishing goals, especially any kind of project you started 4-6 years ago. Take special care of your relationships with elders and mentors rn, cause this is the year that those relationships will successfully overlap with long-term goals, if you work for it. The lunar eclipse on the 16th in Pisces will help you realize these goals and social opportunities, while the solar eclipse in Virgo on the 1st might have you looking to the past for inspiration. The Sun and a new moon will also be in Libra this month, helping you think practically and make good impressions. Venus’s position in Scorpio won’t have you feelin’ super romantic, but Mars in Capricorn will give you the energy you need to start a 2 year-long project. But be careful-- Mercury’s retrograde throughout the month may cause accidents if you get too busy, not to mention difficulties seeing the big picture.
Your September Trax: Maybe listening to a blast from the past like The Ronettes will help you get on with certain seniors in your life or spark inspiration. If you need something a little more modern, Angel Olsen is your gal, and her Sept. 2nd release My Woman is the perfect combo of modern indie rock and old-timey folk vocals. For something with more of a late-70’s/80’s spin, you might consider NYC quartet TEEN’s 2016 album, Love Yes.
Dates to watch: 19th, 20th

Diet Cig, Free Cake For Every Creature @ Middle East Up, Sept. 20th

Aquarius
Aquarius (Ruling Planet: Uranus; Element: Air) The most loyal of the air signs, Aquarians are known for their ability to make a lot of friends and their wide range of interests. The Water Carrier is the weird but charming, creative, independent type. But your independence can easily read aloof and detached. And like any air sign, you can be particularly inconsistent and unpredictable. Though, of all the air signs, you’re the most set in your ways, partially because of your strong moral compass and humanitarian instincts.
A set of eclipses will provide you with some crucial energy this month. First, the solar eclipse in Virgo on the 1st occurs in your intimacy sector, meaning you should take this time to work on any issues in that realm. Don’t freak out if you’re feeling too close or too far from your loved ones. Trust -- when Mercury comes out of retrograde on the 22nd, it’ll be easier to move forward. On the 16th, the lunar eclipse in Pisces can put an emphasis on building your confidence -- and eliminating what (or who) might be cramping your style. Later on in the month, Libra’s bold influence on the new moon will have you feeling adventurous, and it’s a good month for travel. Jupiter and the Sun also tour Libra, which might lighten your mood, and you’ll profit from looking on the bright side of things. The planet of love’s position in Scorpio can be favorable for first impressions. Finally, when Mars shifts into the sign before yours (Capricorn) on the 27th, you might find yourself needing extra rest and that you’ll get more work done with you’re alone. Use this time to do some thinking about what motivates you in order to work on transforming your inner self.
Your September Trax: If you’re finding the eclipses a challenge, let our your frustrations with some badass angry rock like G.L.O.S.S latest release, or this sick tune by Warehouse. And keep an eye out for the Sept. 16th release by Against Me!, called Shape Shift With Me, via Total Treble. As the month nears its close, something more laid back should be in order, and ROAR has some weird 60’s pop with a synth swing.
Dates to watch: 21st, 22nd
Your events: Angel Olsen, Rodrigo Amarante @ The Sinclair, Sept. 21st
Explosions in the Sky, Julianna Barwick @ HOB, Sept. 21st
Wild Child @ The Sinclair, Sept. 22nd
Pisces
Pisces (Ruling Planet: Neptune; Element: Water) Your head is in the clouds, Pisces, and you have a grand imagination. But this way of thinking can often delve into escapist territory, and you have no problem deluding yourself to avoid harsh realities. You can be a pessimist who blames things on bad luck. And like any other water sign, you’re sensitive. But The Fishes in particular are intuitive to others’ feelings, and, although you often feel misunderstood by most, you have the ability to understand many people from all different walks of life.
Mercury’s retrograde especially affects your relationship this month, as it transits Virgo and your relationship sector until the 22nd. Don’t be surprised if you encounter mad miscommunications, rekindle a romance with an old flame, or take a break in your relationship. Also on the 22nd, the Sun shifts into Libra, and your mood will shift with it, appearing more serious, passionate, and intense. Jupiter and the new moon’s positions in the air sign this month only intensify your sex drive 😉 along with the tendency to take more things seriously and to strengthen your emotional bonds. Venus, the planet of love, will have you trying new things when it transits fellow water sign Scorpio on the 23rd. Then, sensible Capricorn’s influence on Mars can give you the perspective you need to make objective life decisions, and that might mean something unconventional. Lastly-- the eclipses. Virgo’s position when the solar eclipses passes on the 1st may have you taking second chances on people from your past. Second, prep for the 16th when a lunar eclipse occurs in your sign because you might be prone to feeling emotionally tumultuous during this time, so give yourself an outlet for all your feels. You’ll have the space to reap what you sow, if you put in the work.
Your September Trax: This month is all about relationships and passion, and there’s something about Rhye’s album Woman that perfectly captures a seriousness and a sexiness. On Sept. 9th, the M.I.A. album A.I.M. releases Interscope, so look out for that. Warpaint also has a new album called Heads Up (out on Sept. 23rd via Rough Trade) that seems like it could suit an emotional and innovative mood. Lastly, Lapsley’s Long Way Home provides all the jaded feelings and smooth tunes that your watery little heart might desire.
Dates to watch: 23rd, 24th
Your events: Julien Baker, Sianna Plavin @ Aurora (Providence, RI), Sept. 23rd
Peter Bjorn and John, City of the Sun, Cleopold @ Royale, Sept. 24th
